Level 1 Technician

DPT 1 work in a variety of milk production settings on dairy farms and are primarily responsible for milking cows to produce a high quality product and to promote animal well being. They must be able to work independently and apply standard operating procedures to maintain a safe worksite and product, healthy animals, and a clean environment.

DPT 1 collect a product for human consumption governed by very specific quality requirements and standards. They ensure site sanitation and maintain automated milking equipment and milk handling systems, including bulk storage tanks.

DPT 1 must be able to assess animal health as well detect estrous and demonstrate knowledge of animal behaviour and handling of livestock. They may also be required to maintain treatment, health and production records of cows. The use of sophisticated computerized systems and software applications such as automated herd management programs is routine.

DPT 1 perform their work in a variety of milking facilities and must demonstrate a good understanding of all components of a milking system and be able to maintain and troubleshoot a range of equipment.

Graduation Requirements

Technical/Classroom Training: approximately 120 hours (25 days).

Practical: 1000 hours of sponsored on-farm work experience.
